Is It Possible To Avoid Stress At Work?

Share

Why certainly it is possible to avoid stress at work: don’t have a job! Since that isn’t so realistic, there must be a better way. It is terrible to wake up at night, thinking about your job, your boss, having feelings of insecurity and anxiety.

There are many reasons to feel stressed out at work:

  • Unreasonable demands placed on you. Too much work and too little time in which to do it.
  • Being “pigeon-holed” or labeled as something you really are not.
  • Management that is out of touch with the day to day operations and makes decisions that are out of sync with the real needs of your company.
  • Business culture that fails to consider the needs of employees. Being punished for going to the dentist, taking your child to the doctor, attending a funeral of a loved one.

What can you do to avoid stress at work?

  1. If possible, talk to your supervisor. Keep talking to higher ups and see if you can get some reasonable expectations about your productivity. If you need help or equipment, speak up.
  2. If you find yourself labeled for something that you are not, just make sure the shoe does not fit and move on. In private, one on one, you could maybe speak to the ones who seem to have you labeled. It is surprising to find out what sort of pre-conceived ideas people can have.
  3. If your management is out of touch, see if you can find somebody to help connect them. It might take some effort and guts to speak up, but, in the long run, it is much less stressful than the status quo.
  4. If your company is not employee friendly, you probably are not going to change anything at all. Shop cultures take a long time to develop and are very difficult to change. Usually, only a dramatic decision to change from the top down can make a lasting difference. Get a different job, if you can.
  5. Work on your own personal life. Take classes, expand your horizons. A very good course to manage your own personal stress at work is offered by a great company called Mind Tools. It is not expensive and can really make a difference. You can also move at your own pace, which is good for stress as well!

Stress and Teenagers (Got any ideas?)

Share

Hmmm… stress and teenagers, I wonder…..

I can hardly think of something more stressful than being a teenager, especially these days! For parents it can be a bit like a bucking bronco ride: some days everything seems on an even keel and the next moment it’s like nothing good ever happened. Does that sound familiar?

A while back my 24 year old son sent me the nicest email, full of gratitude for all that I had done for him and our family, he even mentioned at least 10 or 15 things that came to mind. Of course I loved hearing this, but I couldn’t help but remember when, as a teenager, he was so angry with me, for no apparent reason. At the time I just accepted it and tried to show him unconditional love, more or less successfully.

I recently asked him about that message and we had a nice chat. Then he told me that he just couldn’t understand why he had been so angry at the time. He never did offer any good reason, he was just angry and I was the lightning rod. At the time there was a great deal of family stress we were experiencing, so I’m sure that factored in.

A friend of mine once gave me some advice about teenagers and stress. He held up his hand over his face with his fingers spread a little, so he could still see, but not so well. This is how you have to look at teenagers. You just need to overlook quite a bit and focus on the important things.Once you start down the road of nit-picker, you are doomed.

Ok, here are some ideas:

  1. Resolve in your heart that you will love them no matter what. You don’t need to like what they say or do, buy you need to love them. They sense this and need you, even if they act the opposite.
  2. Accept that they can, at times, be temporarily “insane.” Don’t take it so seriously, it usually will pass with hormones coming into balance. Teenagers and hormones are like the spring weather: unpredictable and full of life.
  3. As much as possible, provide a stable, secure environment for them. This will give them security and an anchor.
  4. Do things with them! Expose them to good things, good people, good activities. Try to expose them to people you think they might emulate or admire. Take them hiking, kayaking, on walks, swimming, play basketball or catch or frisbee, but do things.
  5. It might be nearly impossible, but help them to get enough sleep! A lot of grouchiness is caused by a lack of sleep.
  6. Trust them, but monitor them. Give them plenty of line, but keep your hand on the reel. Like catching a fish, they need to swim out and explore, but keep your connection with them.
  7. Talk to them
  8. Listen to them
  9. Talk with them
  10. Give them lots of hugs and encouragement. Remember that you cannot store up love, it must be renewed everyday.

Is There An Anxiety and Stress Cure?

Share

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an anxiety and stress cure that could magically solve your problems and take away your symptoms of stress? Of course, no such thing exists, but with the right plan and a few things to help along the way, you can do a lot to ease your stress.

Try letting go

There is a rather strange paradox that when you let go of your troubles, you can begin to solve them. I look at it sort of like the story of the tar baby. Wasn’t it the rabbit who was angry with the tar baby and just kept fighting it and fighting it? The more he fought it, the worse it became.

It can be just the same with us: we get all uptight and nervous and just keep “punching” at our problem, but it only makes matters worse. When we let go and submit to the circumstances, we calm down and are able to step back and look at things more objectively. Take a deep breath, in fact take a few, you might even take a walk, if you can. Then, when you face the challenge that can stress you out, you are strengthened and can think more clearly.

The habit of relying on a higher power can be a tremendous help as well. Another rather odd thing is that if you keep asking God for help, you always find yourself in a position of asking God for help. It is a beginning, not a state of being. Once you ask, act in faith that you will receive your request. It isn’t magic or hocus pocus, you still need to think and act; but many people get stuck in the asking part and just keep asking.

When you let go, you are really saying that you cannot manage this on your own and you need help from above. Some might view this as weakness, on the contrary, it is strength. In reality, who in their right mind would imagine that they have the answers and ability to handle everything on their own? Only a beginner, or a very arrogant person. Life will soon bring you to your knees, that much is certain!

Your physical makeup

Everyone has a different physical constitution and can bear varying degrees of stress. Some people are just wired differently and don’t have the “nerves” that another has. Also, fatigue can wear down even the strongest among us. Burnout is very common in parenting and family services agencies. Besides parenting my own children, I was a house parent for juvenile delinquents for a time. Talk about relentless stress! It was quite apparent that many of the house parents had been worn down by the continual wear and tear of all the job demands.

Get Replenished!

This wear and tear is very serious for a parent. Family stress can gradually take it’s toll on you. You need time to recover and replenish your inner fountains. If you neglect this, it is only a matter of time before you find yourself speaking and acting in a manner you would rather avoid, to put it politely!

There are many things you can do to accomplish this. Here are some tried and proven ideas:

  • Take a class on something you enjoy. Dance, music, art, computers, language, whatever gives you enjoyment.
  • Make sure you get some fresh air and exercise. Even if it is only a walk, make the time. 15 minutes can go a long way.
  • Do something you have never done before. Learn to salsa. Go kayaking. Hike up a mountain. Go swimming in the ocean. Camp outside in a tent. Watch a basketball game with a friend.
  • Take a class on baking. Make some yummy treats for your colleagues. They’ll love you for it!

Take Care of Your Body and Mind

What can be done if you have tried all of the above and more, yet you still find your stress levels to high? You are tense and irritable, can’t sleep well, have feelings of anxiety and fear? Many people turn to pharmaceuticals to help, such as anti-depressants. Yet these powerful drugs can do more harm than good. They are powerful and often produce some very unpleasant side effects.

A great alternative to prescription drugs is a marvelous over the counter supplement called Proloftin. It is an all natural alternative to prescription medication that is guaranteed to work or you get your money back. Plus, because it is a combination of 5 top all natural ingredients, it has no harmful side effects. If you are suffering from ordinary daily stress (like almost everyone else!) you really owe it to yourself to try Proloftin.

A great and very inexpensive way to learn how to manage your personal stress can be found in my ebook, “Stress Secrets.” It is full of useful, personal insight on dealing with difficult people. You will learn how to grow as a healthy person in the midst of life’s many obstacles. Find out more here.

What About Flaxseed and Hot Flashes?

Share

There is a lot in the news lately about flaxseed and hot flashes, and it is good news! A study was done by the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, led by Sandhya Pruthi, MD and colleagues that gives some great hope for relief from hot flashes.

A group of women were given 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed twice a day, which they mixed into their food and drink. These women were having at least 14 hot flashes a week, plus they were not taking any estrogen to relieve their symptoms of menopause.

The good news

These women found that their hot flashes were reduced by 50% and the strength of the hot flash was dimished by 57%! The full report appears in the Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology.

For a woman suffering from the discomforts of hot flashes, this is very promising and easy to use. Compared to drugs, there were minimal side effects. These consisted of bloating and diarrhea in a few of the women. It is quite possible that this could be avoided by using a liquid form of flaxseed oil, rather than the ground seeds.

An excellent source for organic flaxseed oil is Herbal Remedies. They carry a complete line of products for health and beauty with an emphasis on natural remedies and high quality products and reduced prices.  They have a pure, organic, unfiltered flaxseed oil available at a great price.

Make Use of the Natural Stress Relief of Herbs

Share

Anyone who has had chamomile tea as a way to relax has experienced the natural stress relief of herbs firsthand. There are many, many more herbs that can help you find relief from stress.

The best thing you can do to deal with stress is to deal with the underlying cause of the stress, obviously. But often there is precious little to be done, especially if things are a bit outside of your control. Modern day life can certainly add a lot to family stress! In that case, it is wise to make use of the many herbs that are safe and effective for stress control.

I will only mention 3, since these are well-known and are sure to help you in numerous ways. A very good friend of mine is a natural healer and herbal therapist. She uses these on an almost daily basis in her practice. (I think her most favorite is cognac, but that is not supposed to be one of these! Really, she does use it very moderately to help very uptight men lighten up a bit.)

Kava Kava Root

Kava kava is a root used in the South Pacific to help people relax, reduce the stress in the body, increase mental clarity and help deal with anxiety. It is commonly drunk as a tea, which is a great way to take it. Another common way to use it is in pill form, for those who don’t want tea or don’t have the time because they just can’t take the time.

Natural Rest Herbal Formula

This natural formula contains numerous herbs that help your body rebuild so it can deal with stress. Stress is well-known as a major force in depleting the nutrients in our bodies, and this formula was made specifically to help this. It contains valerian root, Black Cohosh, chamomile, skull cap,  and more. It also contains many minerals in trace amounts, which also help your body deal with stress and anxiety.

This formula is also great for people who have trouble sleeping. Insomnia can be devastating! A huge plus is that it is not habit forming; it is totally natural.

Bach Rescue Remedy Flower Essences

The essences of flowers are combined in a tincture to give you immediate stress relief. I used this one time on a very long and stressful trip, and it worked wonders. Each time I put a few drops on my tongue I was instantly energized, yet very calm and relaxed. It really was remarkable. It can be used in tea, juices, water, or just add some drops to your tongue.
